waste management program
At Willana Associates, we are committed to reducing, reusing and recycling our waste rather than simply disposing of it.
What do we want to achieve?
Our aim is to;
reduce the amount of waste we produce;
reuse what we can or donate it to others eg, schools, pet shops, etc
recycle as much as possible of what is left
dispose of any leftover waste in a responsible manner.
We are keen to partner with our neighbours; Randwick City Council, UNSW and neighbouring developments on programs to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
How are we performing?
We have made substantial improvements in the Company in the reduction of our waste. At the end of each financial year, we assess the volume of paper stock used in the year. The comparisons to previous years are promising to eventually maintaining a paperless office environment.
Paper
Due to the nature of our business it is inevitable that staff work within a paper based environment. It has been a unanimous decision to change the way in which the office functions, moving from a hard copy, paper based environment to an electronic environment. We are keen to educate our clients in the way our business manages its environment, encouraging emails, pdf copies of drawings etc as a way of limiting paper wastage.
Paper that is purchased is 100% recycled. Separate recycle bins are supplied to each employee. The paper is collected each week and sorted. Paper that can be reused in the printer/copier is placed is separate trays. Paper that is already recycled is placed in the shredding machine for collection. The shredded material is collected by an external contractor and recycled to make 100% recycled paper.
General waste
Co-mingled (including glass bottles, aluminium cans and PET bottles) and general waste is placed in a recycle bin each week. It is assumed that the material is recycled appropriately by Council’s contractors.
Toner cartridges
Our photocopy tone cartridges are all recycled.
Glass
Glass is collected in separate bins in the office and recycled accordingly.
Computers and other equipment
Willana Associates has as a policy that equipment is leased for a period of no less than 3 years. Once the lease expires, the item/s are returned and a new lease arrangement is activated. This reduces the need to dispose of equipment. Equipment that is purchased and is outdated is offered to primary schools in the local area or to charity shops, if in good working order.
What are we doing?
We are currently working to identify, quantify and confirm what we are doing with each of the different waste streams. The next step is to identify gaps and opportunities for projects to reduce annual waste by changing our purchasing patterns, reusing materials and recycling as much waste as possible.
Paper
To reduce paper use we are:
defaulting all computer to double-sided printing
encouraging clients to default their printers and photocopiers to double-sided printing
switching all paper towels to recycled paper towels
To make paper recycling easier we are:
providing a recycling box at every desk
providing large recycling bins near the printer/photocopier
sending collected paper to a specialist contractor
